Camera and Microphone
Every control you need during a 1-on-1 call sits in one row at the bottom of the screen. Here is what each one does, and what the other person sees when you use it.
Switching between the front and back camera
Calls open on the front camera. To switch, tap the camera-flip control in the row at the bottom of the call screen — the same row as mute and hang up, kept within one thumb's reach on purpose.
Expect a short pause on the other side when you do it. Flipping is not a filter applied to one stream: the current camera is closed and the other one is opened and sent in its place. A second of black is the switch working, not the call dropping.
Muting your microphone
The mute control stops your audio being sent. The call stays connected and your video keeps going — the other person can see you, just not hear you.
If you unmute and the other person still cannot hear you, unmute once more, or end and restart the call. On some phone and browser combinations an audio stream that has been switched off has to be fully re-sent rather than simply switched back on, and restarting the call is the reliable way to force that.
Covering your camera
Covering your camera hides your video from the other person. What makes this worth knowing is what happens on their side: they are shown that your camera is covered, not that your connection failed. That distinction is the difference between them waiting a moment and them hanging up on what looks like a dead call.
Camera and microphone permissions
The first time you start a call, your browser — not us — asks for camera and microphone access. Allow it once and the browser remembers it for thundr.mobi.
Because the permission belongs to the browser rather than to an installed app, two ordinary things will make it ask again: clearing site data for thundr.mobi, and opening the site in a private or incognito window. Neither is a fault.
When it does not work
- Black video, call otherwise fine. Another tab or app usually still holds the camera. Close anything else that uses it and restart the call — a phone camera can only be used by one thing at a time.
- The browser never asked for permission. It was answered before and remembered. Open the site settings in your browser for thundr.mobi and set camera and microphone back to Ask or Allow.
- Permission was denied by mistake. Same place. A denied permission is remembered just as firmly as an allowed one, and the prompt will not come back on its own.
- Your video is fine but the picture keeps freezing. That is bandwidth, not permissions. Wi-Fi close to the router, or moving somewhere with better mobile signal, does more than any setting on this page.
